In recent weeks, The Future Foundation has been working to help an Atlanta family fighting not to be evicted from their apartment while at the same time dealing with serious health issues. At the heart of this story is a courageous young person who is the primary caregiver for her mother. Zuri Arceneaux is now 19 and has been the primary caregiver for her mother, Rahru, since she was 16. A number of people who have supported Future Foundation’s efforts to help young people in Atlanta find a better life in and outside the classroom have responded to our plea and donated money to help this struggling family find a safe place to live and the resources to deal with daily medical challenges.
As Zuri tries to navigate her own life as a college student and at the same time serve as a full-time caregiver for her mother, she has felt very alone even overwhelmed. Any 16-year-old forced to deal with challenges like this at a young age feels isolated and by oneself. However, a recent Wall Street Journal article helped Zuri understand that she is one of millions of young people in America forced to give up their enjoyable teen years to serve in the demanding role of family caregiver. Click Here to read the moving story in The Wall Street Journal by Clare Ansberry. Zuri reached out to Ansberry after reading in the article an estimated 5.4 million children across the country facing the same caregiving challenges as she and her mother which was somewhat a solace. On the other hand, she had one more issue though to further complicate her personal challenges, they were also about to be homeless.
