College 4 Career
On November 13, 12 10th-12th grade high school students who are part of the Future Foundation’s College 4 Career program attended the third annual “I Am College Material” Scholarship Fair at Turner Field’s 755 Club.
The fair, which was sponsored by the Scholarship Academy, Atlanta City Councilman Aaron Watson, Post 2 At-Large and the Atlanta Braves Foundation, exposed students to various scholarship opportunities and gave them a first-hand look at the process of applying for and obtaining a scholarship. The College 4 Career students participated in scholarship essay training and mock scholarship interviews. They also had the opportunity to have their scholarship essays reviewed by Gates Millennium Scholars.
“Our College 4 Career students were able to see multiple students receive their scholarships from various organizations,” says Brandon Woodard, Future Foundation program manager. “The experience of seeing their peers receive scholarships left a positive effect on our youth. After the fair many of them expressed how they would love the opportunity to receive a scholarship of any value in front of their peers, family, and school.” We have seen the benefit of exposing our youth to such opportunities; during the summer of 2012, one hundred percent of our teen center participants graduated from high school and entered post-secondary institutions. By attending scholarship fairs and other college preparatory events, we hope 100% of our students will continue their education after graduating high school.
