Since our students attended Microsoft’s 22nd Annual Minority Student Day in Alpharetta, GA in March, they’ve been hooked on technology. Over 40 of our students visited Microsoft’s Lenox Mall location twice since then to participate in daily educational workshops for youth. Students from both our Learning and Teen Centers attend workshops every other week and have completely embraced technology as more than an outlet for video gaming but as a career option and a method to express creative energies. During the in-store workshops, students have the opportunity to experiment with Office 2013, the Surface, Windows 8, Windows Phone, & Xbox and discover how each device broadens their learning experiences. As Microsoft describes it, “the retail store becomes an interactive, hands-on technology classroom, where children learn by doing.” But their experience won’t end there. Microsoft will host our students for an 8-week technology course this summer starting in June. Many thanks to Microsoft for being a great corporate citizen. Their community initiatives are helping close the opportunity divide by supporting youth and providing access to technological learning opportunities.
