Dreams vs. Reality

October 9, 2015 by Future Foundation

My heart has been heavy this week as I learned about the consecutive killings of two South Fulton students due to senseless violence. One of those students, Benson West, was a freshmen at Banneker High School and participating in our RealTalk ATL Program. I never met Benson, but I learned from our team this morning he was quiet in class, it was clear he was struggling with something, and recently asked about our College4Careers Program. Hearing about Benson's inquiry eerily illustrated for me the gap between the dreams and the realities facing our youth living in impossible situations due to violence and poverty. Above are pictures I received this week of students at Banneker High School … [Read more...] about Dreams vs. Reality

Community Circles build teams, fight bullying

July 30, 2015 by Future Foundation

If you want to make a large impact in society, start in your own community. That’s one of the lessons rising 6th and 7th graders get during our Community Circles exercises, which begin each day of summer program. The 30-minute Community Circles focus on topics that aren’t typically addressed in school. “Students at this age are curious about a lot of different things,” said lead teacher Johnathan Reaves. “And, since our facilitators are not that much older than the students themselves, the students often find they can relate to them better.” A recent Community Circles discussion compared the church shooting in Charleston to the 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham. … [Read more...] about Community Circles build teams, fight bullying

“We [Heart] UPS”

July 30, 2015 by Future Foundation

Since 2012, UPS has awarded Future Foundation more than $50,000 to support after-school programming. In early 2015, we requested additional funding to support the Reef House Afterschool Program (RHAP) Digital Learning Lab Project. Digital media is altering the landscape of learning in both higher education and K-12 schools. Access to technology out-of-school is crucial to students’ success in the classroom and ultimately in their careers. An investment in a digital learning lab enables us to provide an inclusive and blended digital learning experience tailored to each student in an effort to increase digital literacy and math skills, time spent on digital learning activities and student … [Read more...] about “We [Heart] UPS”

SUMMERTIME STEM @ SIEMENS

July 22, 2014 by Future Foundation

On Tuesday 7/15/2014 the teens were invited to participate in Siemens Science Day. George Buchanan, a Future Foundation Board Member,  taught the teens all about windmills and how they operate. They learned that “Wind turbines”, the modern equivalent of the windmill, are usually grouped into large collections of units to produce electricity. These are called wind power plants, or wind farms. They are generally located in agricultural areas where large plots of land are available, and agricultural activities are undisturbed by their action. Often located in windy areas of the country, they can also be constructed offshore to make use of winds that sweep over the bodies of water. Wind-powered … [Read more...] about SUMMERTIME STEM @ SIEMENS
