There's nothing quite like the connection made when reading to a child. The connection is even more meaningful when the reader is reading his or her own book. That simple thought drove a new activity for students at our Learning and Teen Centers: writing and illustrating their own books-then reading them to pre-K children at local daycare facilities. The idea was developed by one of our employee innovation program teams called Gift Givers. Because the books can be read over and over, we call it gifts that keep on giving. And the students become heroes to the children they read to. Students are creating more than a dozen books with themes of giving: Gift of Friendship, Gift of Love, … [Read more...] about Making Heroes out of Our Learning and Teen Center Students

Last week's lesson in Physics courtesy of Lead Teacher, Glen Hordges: Efficiency = Distance x 454 / Weight (gm) - the ratio of effective output to the total input! Students of the Reef House Teen Center had the opportunity to plan, design, and construct a poster car using the following materials: one sheet of poster board, one plastic drinking straw, two P.C. 1/2 x 3 1/2 hanger rods, 1 ruler, pair of scissors, a glue gun, a compass, scrap paper & a pencil. The goal was to transport a "C" battery while traveling a maximum distance beyond a 3x4 ft. launching ramp. The group with the lightest car gaining the greatest distance would achieve the best efficiency overall. In groups of … [Read more...] about A Lesson in Physics – Poster Car Competition
