Making Heroes out of Our Learning and Teen Center Students
There's nothing quite like the connection made when reading to a child. The connection is even more meaningful when the reader is reading his or her own book. That simple thought drove a new activity for students at our Learning and Teen Centers: writing and illustrating their own books-then reading them to pre-K children at local daycare facilities. The idea was developed by one of our employee innovation program teams called Gift Givers. Because the books can be read over and over, we call it gifts that keep on giving. Sublime in the Community
Last Thursday, our Teen Center students visited Sublime Doughnuts to learn a little about what it takes to start and run your own business. There is no better example than Sublime. He first discovered his passion for cooking while in high school while taking a food service class. He shared with the students that a Dunkin Donuts executive spoke to his class and he never forgot how much fun the executive seemed to have in his career. From that moment, Kamal knew he wanted to start his own business where he could do what he loves and nurture his creativity. Following … [Read more...] about Sublime in the Community
Young Professionals of NY: Day 10 of 24 Days of Preparing To Stand Out Against Poverty
Fedna Jacquet, Actress, 24 - Imagine, Explore, Communicate - I prepare to stand out against poverty by choosing to do community based theater. Individuals in our society have a way of ignoring the larger world around them. I will always stay current and honest to the important issues at hand such as poverty, education, and equality. Scott Brody, Financial Associate, 23 (top) - Ambition, Ingenuity, Resilience - I seek to combat inequality by focusing on mentorship and relationships as a means to increase exposure to the myriad of opportunities that exist in … [Read more...] about Young Professionals of NY: Day 10 of 24 Days of Preparing To Stand Out Against Poverty
