Today, United Way of Greater Atlanta announced the winners of its DARE to Forget the Box! prizes. Out of the 80 agencies that applied and 25 finalists, we were one of four collaborative teams addressing critical systemic issues to be selected to receive prizes. We are proud to say that we are a recipient of a $300,000 grant annually, totaling $900,000 over the next three years that will greatly impact the lives of over a hundred youth and families in South Fulton! There's nothing quite like the connection made when reading to a child. The connection is even more meaningful when the reader is reading his or her own book. That simple thought drove a new activity for students at our Learning and Teen Centers: writing and illustrating their own books-then reading them to pre-K children at local daycare facilities. The idea was developed by one of our employee innovation program teams called Gift Givers. Because the books can be read over and over, we call it gifts that keep on giving.
